Emergency Shelter Exhibition Brisbane

emerg8BE Collective was an organiser, supporter, engineering consultant (and exhibitor) for ESE Brisbane – 17-20 July 2012

The Emergency Shelter Exhibition (ESE) Brisbane formed part of a national series, and was a collaborative endeavour of Queensland design firms to create life-size emergency shelter prototypes which was displayed in Brisbane’s King George Square from the 17th to the 20th of July.

Exhibition Curator, Jun Sakaguchi (Architect), explained; “This exhibition is to propose shelters that could not only protect people from rain and other elements in emergency situations, but also provide a space to feel secure and comfortable in a disastrous environment. This is a fundamental component of the recovery process.” Jun also wanted the shelter concepts to utilise construction materials readily available after a disaster. Designers have thus drawn from the concept of creating comfort out of chaos.

Through this charitable event ESE Brisbane aimed to raise funds from the public as well as construction industry sponsors in order to donate to the Australian Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery Appeal, supporting communities affected by natural disasters around the world.

Exhibition Objectives were:

  • Fundraising for natural disaster recovery needs
  • Exhibit interactive installations (shelters 5-10 m2) with reference to emergency response in disaster scenarios
  • Foster awareness of the physical & psychological recovery needs of displaced peoples following natural disasters
  • Strengthen the connection between architects and the public.

Exhibiting Firms:
Architectus; Arkhefield; Built Environment Collective; Conrad Gargett; Donovan Hill; Jackson Teece; Neylan Architecture; PDT Architects; Riddel Architecture; Tonic; TVS Architects; Woods Bagot
