BEC’s New Brisbane Base!

The new digs come with twice as much floor space, and will (eventually) include a ping pong table, chin up bar, break out area, shower, and mini-bar. Our Brisbane office team were highly involved in the design of the office layout and included features.

We’ve taken some inspiration from architectural offices locally in Brisbane and in Sydney, aiming for a very raw industrial look. Polished concrete floors and a beautiful distressed white brick feature-wall are complemented by the high ceiling and ‘floating’ LED lighting by Caribou. Circulation is achieved through the use of cheap-ass fans (sadly not Big-Ass fans) , and the furniture and partitions heavily feature OSB (Oriented Strand Board – a sustainable, European, high strength timber product). BE Collective designed furniture sits aside select pieces from our inspirational friends at LuxxBox.

Expect an improved front façade and a rear balcony in the not-too-distant future.

Swing by for a coffee and check out the progress! (more…)

Sunken Stadium Proposed for Auckland

As New Zealand discusses whether their largest stadium, Eden Park, should be replaced or expanded, some wild ideas are being floated…and perhaps successfully sunk.

Appropriately named The Crater, this out of the box stadium proposal was put forward by local design and marketing figure Phil O’Reilly. His pitch suggests a stadium sunken into the waterfront, which would even allow cruise liners to berth on either side! Viewing would be great from the nearby high-rises, and according to O’Reilly the stadium could even be cheaper than the traditional above-ground variety. We’re not too sure about that, but what a cool idea!

Princess Street ESD and Solar, Petrie Terrace

Project No. 6791

The BE Collective team were commissioned to provide ESD (Environmentally Sustainable Design) consultancy services on a fantastically designed bespoke home in Brisbane’s Petrie Terrace. We were thrilled to work in close cahoots with Owen Architecture – of whom we’re big fans.

We undertook the required energy efficiency analysis, satisfying the requirements for a Class 1 building in Queensland, covering insulation, glazing, shading, energy use, air conditioning, and lighting.

Our works also included design and specification for a large solar photovoltaic system, capable of generating 6.5 kilowatts of energy. We designed a tailor-made system for a FIFO worker, using in-depth analysis of energy demand and usage patterns. 3D modelling and hourly energy usage and generation data profiles were used to evaluate a range of solar energy options. This energy will be stored in one of the first Tesla Powerwall 2’s ever to be fitted in Australia.  The Powerwall 2’s 14kWh capacity Li-ion battery means the home will be effectively energy self-sufficient. As you’d expect this had the Musk-enthusiasts in the office waving their high-tech sustainably-sourced fan banners. (more…)

South Swivel Bar Stool – LuxxBox

Project No. 6673

The BE Collective team have been biting at the bit to work with Brisbane design legends Luxxbox on one of their phenomenal furniture designs, and were recently given the opportunity.

Our commission was to ensure stability and structural integrity on a variant of their South SL stools destined for the Brisbane Airport as a part of 2015’s $45m redevelopment. In order to fit with the airports strict aesthetic requirements, spotted gum and stainless steel replaced the traditional powder coated aluminium.

The result was a sturdy, highly durable and very attractive stool. Check them out next time you’re at the Brisbane International Airport.    (more…)

Meet Our New Neighbours…Tesla!

You heard correctly – Tesla is moving in next door. A mere block from our BEC Brisbane office lies Emporium, which *fingers crossed* will be the site of Tesla’s next Australian store and supercharger system.

We were lucky enough to specify a Tesla PowerWall on our recent ESD commission on Princess Street, Petrie Terrace. .

Tesla has produced the fastest, most beautiful, and luxurious electric vehicles on the planet, and is fuelling them for free with their solar-powered supercharger stations. A supercharger in Brisbane would complete a network spanning the eastern cities of Australia, from Melbourne to Brisbane.

Our Brisbane team are die hard Musk-Fans, and can’t wait to check out the new showroom – due in late 2017. (more…)
