63 Minimbah Rd, also known as the Aperture House, is a striking 4-storey concrete residence designed to integrate seamlessly with its dramatic waterfront cliffside setting. The project demonstrates innovative structural engineering solutions that respond to both the challenging topography & the architectural vision.

Aperture House was delivered on a steep sandstone escarpment, requiring a series of carefully planned structural tiers to safely support the building as it steps down the terrain. Robust horizontal concrete elements & strategically placed lightweight volumes allowed the structure to distribute loads effectively while maintaining stability on the highly constrained site. The upper modules, positioned to cantilever toward key outlooks, were engineered to manage significant overhang & wind forces without compromising structural performance.

This project is a clear example of engineering enabling design intent on a complex site. By addressing challenging ground conditions, elevation changes, & limited construction access, the team developed tailored structural solutions that ensured durability, safety, & constructability. The result is a technically resolved residence that performs reliably within a demanding natural environment.

Structural Highlights

  • Creative use of architectural elements as structural components, including large-span feature picture frames, high-level window openings, a cantilevered entry awning, & strategic load transfers.
  • Construction on a steep, rock-strewn site required extensive use of shotcrete, temporary & permanent rock anchors, & careful piling techniques.
  • Piles traversed large rock boulders (“floaters”), limiting progress to one or two piles per day.
  • In areas where conventional piling platforms were not feasible, steel micropiles were employed to ensure structural stability on the steep banks.
