Barton Street

Project No. 6807

BE Collective was commissioned by Jason Bird (Founder, managing director, and designer at Luxxbox) to work on structural alterations and additions on ‘The Bird House’ as it has come to be known in the office.  The existing house is a two-storey construction with single-storey street frontage on stumps, and a lower storey which is part built in.

Our mission – as we chose to accept it – was to take the existing house and transform it into a modern dwelling that grows from and compliments the surrounding terrain. Our work included an extension, pool and carport to create a living space that a world class design professional would appreciate.

The diverse professional skillset of our team allowed us control of the project across disciplines, meaning we could complete the revitalised building design; structural analysis and design; and energy efficiency design process comprehensively and internally. This enabled greater communication across disciplines and a unity of vision throughout every stage of the project. After taking over the design process, BEC was able to drastically reduce construction costs, while increasing thermal performance of the building and provide significant engineering solutions and comprehensive ESD for this structurally complex construction. Princess Street ESD and Solar, Petrie Terrace

Project No. 6791

The BE Collective team were commissioned to provide ESD (Environmentally Sustainable Design) consultancy services on a fantastically designed bespoke home in Brisbane’s Petrie Terrace. We were thrilled to work in close cahoots with Owen Architecture – of whom we’re big fans.

We undertook the required energy efficiency analysis, satisfying the requirements for a Class 1 building in Queensland, covering insulation, glazing, shading, energy use, air conditioning, and lighting.

Our works also included design and specification for a large solar photovoltaic system, capable of generating 6.5 kilowatts of energy. We designed a tailor-made system for a FIFO worker, using in-depth analysis of energy demand and usage patterns. 3D modelling and hourly energy usage and generation data profiles were used to evaluate a range of solar energy options. This energy will be stored in one of the first Tesla Powerwall 2’s ever to be fitted in Australia.  The Powerwall 2’s 14kWh capacity Li-ion battery means the home will be effectively energy self-sufficient. As you’d expect this had the Musk-enthusiasts in the office waving their high-tech sustainably-sourced fan banners. (more…)

South Swivel Bar Stool – LuxxBox

Project No. 6673

The BE Collective team have been biting at the bit to work with Brisbane design legends Luxxbox on one of their phenomenal furniture designs, and were recently given the opportunity.

Our commission was to ensure stability and structural integrity on a variant of their South SL stools destined for the Brisbane Airport as a part of 2015’s $45m redevelopment. In order to fit with the airports strict aesthetic requirements, spotted gum and stainless steel replaced the traditional powder coated aluminium.

The result was a sturdy, highly durable and very attractive stool. Check them out next time you’re at the Brisbane International Airport.    (more…)

Bank Street Apartments

Project No. 6624

The Bank St development is located in the heart of West End, Brisbane. Comprised of 23 apartments over 6-storeys – including a rooftop pool and deck, the project is designed to offer comfort, luxury and convenience. The development includes a two-level basement with carefully planned entrance to achieve circulation requirements and minimise the likelihood of flooding.

BE Collective’s commissioned scope includes the structural and civil hydraulic aspects of the development, including sewer upgrade, all the way through the design & documentation and construction phases.

Site constraints, maximisation of GFA, and achieving required circulation necessitated quite complicated cantilevered transfer slabs on the ground and first floors. The suspended basement slabs and substructure were also an area of significant challenge and success, with plain reinforced concrete slabs spanning over 8 metres to achieve isle width and ease of traffic movement.

Following on a successful design & documentation stage and development and DA approval, the project programme sees construction starting in early 2017. (more…)

Burwood Nursing Home

Project No. 6777

Burwood Nursing Home

BE Collective was proud to work alongside Jackson Teece on a 3 storey plus basement building, which will facilitate a high-end aged care facility for inner Sydney.

Our commission included preliminary structural, building services, a Stormwater Drainage Concept Plan (SWDCP), and mechanical consultancy on Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC).

Our team had to work within rigid height restrictions and coding, specifically in regards to air conditioners placed on top of the structure. We proposed a cutting edge gas powered air-condition system, which would save the client energy costs over time, improve the sustainability of the building, and could be moved off the top of the building to ensure compliance. These kinds of systems are only just being introduced to Australia, and we’re aware of only one supplier in country, Yanmar. (more…)
